AI visibility vs domain authority

Does domain authority decide whether AI engines name you?

The short answer

Not on its own. Domain authority predicts where a website ranks in a list of links. AI engines build their answers from a much wider set of pages. In the 6 audits we ran in September 2026, 60% of the 3,032 websites the engines used as sources were outside the top 1 million websites.

Two numbers, two questions

What is the difference between domain authority and AI visibility?

Domain authority predicts a ranking

Domain authority is a score from 1 to 100 that SEO tool vendors give a whole website. Moz calls it Domain Authority and Ahrefs calls it Domain Rating. Both are built mostly from the links other sites point at yours. The score predicts how well your pages will rank in a list of ten blue links. It says nothing about the words an AI engine writes.

AI visibility counts a mention

AI visibility is how often your brand is named inside the answers that ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews write for your buyers. It is measured by sending real buyer questions to the engines, several times each, and counting who is named. The unit is a share of answers, per question and per engine, with the date it was taken.

Our own data

How big are the websites the AI engines read?

In September 2026 we ran 6 full AI visibility audits, in France, Singapore, the Philippines and the United States: 1,762 AI answers, with every source the engines used. We looked up each of the 3,032 websites in the Tranco list, a public research ranking of the 1 million most popular websites (list 8P4GV, downloaded September 22, 2026). Most of the websites the engines read are small.

Popularity rank of the websiteWebsitesShare of websitesShare of the times they were used
Top 10,00032111%18%
10,001 to 100,00033311%11%
100,001 to 1 million55518%23%
Not in the top 1 million1,82360%48%

Weighted by how often each website was used in an answer, the picture barely moves: 48% of the uses went to websites outside the top 1 million, and 18% to the top 10,000. The big domains are there, and they account for only 18% of the uses. In our own audit, a list of GEO agencies on grizzle.io, a website outside the top 1 million, was used as a source in 59 of the 299 AI answers.

What the research says

Where does domain authority still matter?

On Google AI Overviews, rankings still count

Google's AI Overviews are built on Google's own ranking. Ahrefs found that 76% of the pages they cite rank in Google's top 10 for the same question (August 2025, 15,000 long-tail queries). BrightEdge found that 54.5% of AI Overview citations came from pages that also rank organically in September 2025, up from 32.3% in May 2024. On Google, the links behind domain authority still help.

On ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot, much less

The same Ahrefs study found that only 12% of the pages cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot rank in Google's top 10 for the same question, against 28.6% for Perplexity. These engines search the web their own way and pick the passages that answer the question best. A top-ranked domain with no passage on the exact question gets left out.

Clear sources help the smaller sites most

The Princeton-led GEO paper (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024) tested what makes a page more visible in AI answers. Citing sources raised the visibility of websites ranked fifth in search by 115.1%, while the top-ranked sites lost 30.3% on average. The authors conclude that these methods help lower-ranked sites most.

Our own site

What does a small, new domain get today?

nextchannelstudio.com was registered on September 1, 2026. It is not in the top 1 million sites of the web. In our own audit of September 21, 2026, the engines named us in 0 of 299 AI answers. We checked before blaming the domain: the engines used many websites as small and as young as ours, and none of the 185 outside websites they read had written about us yet. At 3 weeks old, what we lack is mentions on the pages the engines read. Our share is published every week on /share-of-answer.

Questions

Fair questions about authority. Straight answers.

Does a high Domain Authority help at all in AI search?

It helps most on Google AI Overviews, which build on Google's own ranking. BrightEdge found that 54.5% of AI Overview citations came from pages that also rank organically in September 2025, up from 32.3% in May 2024. On ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot the link is much weaker: only 12% of the pages they cite rank in Google's top 10 for the same question (Ahrefs, August 2025).

Can a small website get named by ChatGPT before a big one?

Yes. In the 6 audits we ran in September 2026, 60% of the 3,032 websites the engines used as sources were outside the top 1 million sites of the web. In our own audit, a list on grizzle.io, a site outside that top 1 million, was used in 59 of the 299 AI answers.

Should I stop working on my backlinks?

No. Links still decide your Google rankings, and Google AI Overviews lean on those rankings. What changes is the order of work: for AI answers, being named on the few pages the engines read about your market does more than a higher score on your whole domain.

Is an AI visibility score a kind of Domain Authority for AI?

Some are. A free signal score grades your own setup out of 100, the way Domain Authority grades your links. Neither one counts whether an engine names you. Only an answer measurement does that: questions sent to the engines, several times, with the answers counted. The difference is explained on our page about AI visibility scores.
