Does a high AI visibility score guarantee that AI engines cite you?
The short answer
No. A high AI visibility score says an engine can quote you. It does not say that it does. Our own website passes 31 of the 35 checks of our AI readiness checkup, and in our audit of September 21, 2026, the engines named us in 0 of 299 answers. Readiness and citations are two different measurements.

What a score can promise
What does a high AI visibility score actually tell you?
It tells you the door is open
Many free AI visibility scores grade your own setup: whether the AI crawlers can read your pages, whether your company is described the same way everywhere, whether your pages carry dates and structured data. A high score means nothing on your side stops an engine from quoting you. That is worth having, and it is fully in your hands.
It cannot tell you anyone walked through
A citation happens inside an answer that the engine writes from pages it picks. Most of those pages belong to other people: lists of the best providers, review platforms, articles, forums. A score built from your own website cannot see any of them, so it cannot say whether you are named.

Do the sites with the best scores get named more?
Not in our data. In September 2026 we ran 6 full AI visibility audits in France, Singapore, the Philippines and the United States. Each one checks the website against our list of AI readiness checks (29 in the first audit, 35 since), then counts how often the engines name the company in about 300 measurements: 20 or 21 buyer questions, 5 engines, 3 runs.
The answers lean on other people's pages. In 1,348 of the 1,762 AI answers of these audits, 77%, the engines used at least one page of a competitor as a source.
The test
How do you check what a vendor's score is really built on?
Ask where the number comes from
Ask whether the score is computed from your website or from the answers the engines write. A score computed from your website is a readiness check. It is useful and it is usually free. Only a count of real answers says whether you are named.
Ask how many answers it rests on
One answer is an anecdote. Answers change between runs and between engines: Ahrefs found that 86% of the top 50 most-mentioned sources are not shared across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews (June 2025). A number worth reading states how many questions, how many engines and how many runs are behind it, and the date.
Ask what happens after the score
45% of marketing leaders say they cannot accurately measure their brand's visibility in AI answers, per Semrush's 2026 AI Visibility Index (June 2026). A score that ends with a sales call does not fix that. A useful one ends with the list of pages and websites where your competitors are named and you are not.

Can an agency guarantee that ChatGPT will name my company?
No, and a written guarantee of citations is a warning sign. The engines decide what they quote, from pages that mostly belong to other people, and their answers change between runs: in our study of 615 AI answers, the same engine asked the same question 3 times returned the same list of brands 2 times out of 205. What an agency can promise is the work, and a measurement before and after it.
What does being eligible to be cited mean?
It means nothing on your site stops an engine from quoting you: the AI crawlers can read your pages, your text exists without JavaScript, your company is clearly identified. Instant Press, which sells a free AI Authority Score, writes in its own FAQ that the score "makes you eligible to be cited; it does not guarantee the citation" (read on instantpress.co, September 8, 2026).
If I am cited as a source, am I named in the answer?
Not always. Semrush and Growth Memo found that 62% of AI citations do not lead to a brand mention in the answer (the ghost citations study, June 2026). An engine can read your page, use a fact from it and name a competitor. Count the mentions as well as the links.
How long after fixing my score should I expect to be named?
Measure again after about 90 days. The fixes on your site are one of three parts of the work. The other two are getting named on the websites the engines already read, and publishing pages that answer your buyers' exact questions. Our own site, 3 weeks old with its checks in place, is named 0 times today: the second and third parts have barely started.
